English Language Learners (ELL)

  • English as a Second Language (ESL) program is currently aligned with the WIDA standards for K-12 students and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS). The district's schools endeavor to ensure that all English Language Learners (ELLs) achieve English language competence needed for academic success as well as personal, social growth and acculturation.

The ESL program is designed to teach ELLs social and academic language skills as well as the cultural aspects of the English language necessary to achieve in academic settings and in society. It provides new ELLs the opportunity to use their abilities to the fullest as they develop and expand their English language proficiency. The program involves teaching the language arts skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing at a variety of students’ proficiency levels; the ESL program instruction is based on students’ individual levels of English proficiency. Classes are taught in English; instruction does not take place in any of the students’ native languages.
